“As a novice in agile ways of working, you can easily be overwhelmed by all the methods out there. There are SAFe, DAD, LeSS, Nexus, and many more. On the surface they all look different because they don’t have a common ground. The only thing they have in common is, somewhat exaggerated, the alphabet. Under the surface, they share a lot, but that is all hidden behind different ways of describing the method. Moreover, if you pick one of these methods, you are limited to what this method includes dictated by the guru who created it. The other methods may have something that you also need, but you can’t mix and match ideas from different method camps.
Instead, we think you should start learning what is the essentials of software development, what is true for all methods and not special for only one or a few of the methods. This is knowledge that you can take with you for the rest of your career. Once you have learnt the essentials, you can extend that knowledge by learning specific practices, one after the other, which are available from a globally or locally located practice eco-system. You don’t need to deal with the massive confusion that comes with many methods all surrounded by communities which more remind on sects than on scientific competence centers.
Does it sound like a dream? Well 12 years ago it was part of the vision identified by the SEMAT (Software Engineering Method and Theory) community. The solution is here today through Essence, an international standard taken by OMG. Essence is that common ground that allows us to get all popular methods under one umbrella so we can create that eco-system of practices from which you can select any composition and create your own method for your team, your team of teams and for your organization. Already today several of the top practices are described on top of Essence. For instance, Scrum is.
Scrum is the most popular practice ever published with millions of certified Scrum Masters. However, Scrum adoption and implementation is reported to have more than a 50% failure rate, which is appalling. Dr. Jeff Sutherland, a co-creator of Scrum, says that “Essence is the key to success” and he refers to that Scrum described on top of Essence.
Join the Future. It is here today!

“Dr. Ivar Jacobson received his Ph.D. in computer science from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, was rewarded the Gustaf Dalén medal from Chalmers University in 2003, and he got an honorary doctor at San Martin de Porres University, Peru, in 2009.
His contributions span over 50 years starting from components and component architecture at Ericsson in 1968 to the essentials of modern software engineering (Essence) in 2019. In between he created Use Cases and what became the Unified Process in 1986 and he was the co-creator of UML in 1997.
Ivar founded his current company, Ivar Jacobson International in 2004, which is a leading SAFe provider in Europe and has multiple Scrum@Scale trainers. He is a founder and a leader of a worldwide network, SEMAT, which has the mission to revolutionize software development based on a kernel of software engineering. The kernel was in 2014 adopted as a formal OMG standard Essence.
Ivar is the principal author of eight books and co-author of another three.
