Imagine you are about to go on an incredible journey to a magical place you have never visited before. You are so excited about this trip, but you don’t know what to expect or what you might need so, you decide to pack everything – just in case. The big day arrives, and you are all set to go, except that you packed enough baggage that requires a dozen mules to carry! Your journey begins with a bus ride to the airport and your fellow passengers are already annoyed with all your baggage blocking the aisle. By the time you get on the plane with all your baggage, the annoyed expressions from your fellow passengers have turned to death stares. You reach the hotel, and you need the entire elevator to yourself to get your baggage to your room. Every morning, your group meets in the lobby ready to head out and explore a different part of the magical place, but you hold them up because you need extra time to manage your baggage. You want to enjoy this magical place, you really do, but you are too exhausted from constantly managing your baggage that you decide the trip wasn’t worth the hassle and are ready to go back. If only you had travelled light!
This is the all too familiar story of many organizations wanting to embark on the agile journey. They are so excited to get their teams to embrace agile practices that they believe will somehow magically solve a bunch of their problems that they spend a ton of money, bring in consultants, set up trainings, purchase tools, define metrics, restructure teams, and set unrealistic goals, only to be frustrated and disappointed with the results after a few months of “implementing” agile. The problem isn’t always with the new practices they embrace, sometimes it lies in the baggage that they bring along on their agile journey.
In this session, we will examine some things that are best left behind when embarking on an agile journey and how letting go of the baggage can lay a solid foundation toward agility.
We will explore ways that can help teams and leaders travel light on their agile journey.
Attendees will learn about the importance of “travelling light” when it comes to agile transformation. They will understand the importance of setting realistic goals toward becoming agile. They will also recognize the most common behaviors that hinder agile transformation and how to let go of them in order to ensure a pleasant and productive agile journey
